I’ve always been a storyteller, but I’ve been in love with printing since I was six.
My family owned a business making wedding and party favors, and before I could spell, I was hand printing and gold-foil stamping ribbons, matchbooks, and napkins. I loved it.
In high school I sold my first comic strip.
But in my twenties, I got a job doing CAD drafting, then discovered Bezier curves and vector graphics - I was completely hooked.
From that moment to this one, I have run a STAT camera, developed and masked plates, composited newsprint columns and advertising, designed catalogs, been a beta-tester for Adobe on several products, managed a pre-press division, run almost every toner based device under the sun, QA tested RIP software, taught classes in color management and Print 101 basics, was a freelance illustrator, run several offset presses from different manufacturers, opened an in-plant print shop, did phone tech support for cross-platform media campaign software, designed better junk mail, digitally corrected photos, managed a photo studio for a department store, became a certified color professional and G7.
And I’ve been writing the entire time.
My very first slogan was “Fear Free Fiber, FAST!” for a fiber optic connector company I was designing a catalog for. The next year, I wrote a campaign suggesting that “Everyone knows business success depends on the right connections.”
I worked on literally thousands of marketing campaigns as the tech guy, but every now and then I contributed on a more creative level. I learned a lot. I got into prepress in the early eighties, was a beta tester for Adobe, and wrote extensive reviews and QA reports.
A decade ago, I moved into training, tutorials, and workflow analysis for a major production print manufacturer, and I have written for them extensively. Tutorials, customer expectation guides, blog posts, internal email newsletters, external newsletters, corporate bios, design tutorials, troubleshooting guides and a great deal more. I’ve given product demos, assisted in sales meetings as the tech expert, been the print expert on hand for thousands of installations and training sessions, and written scores of direct mail letters.
I am AWAI certified as a copywriter, so you can be assured I understand how and why to write everything from direct mail to Facebook ads to white papers and case studies.
